Some of them, such as <strong>cadmium (Cd)<\/strong>, <strong>arsenic (As)<\/strong>, <strong>lead (Pb)<\/strong> and <strong>mercury (Hg)<\/strong>, can be <strong>toxic<\/strong> to human health if they accumulate in the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Main sources of heavy metal exposure:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Food:<\/strong> Heavy metals can contaminate food through water, soil or air. Some examples of foods at higher risk of contamination are:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cereals and leafy vegetables:<\/strong> Cd<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Food, water and air:<\/strong> As<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vegetable products:<\/strong> Pb<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seafood, rice and carrots<\/strong>: Hg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drinking water:<\/strong> Drinking water can become contaminated with heavy metals through mining, agriculture or industry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Air:<\/strong> Air can become contaminated with heavy metals through fossil fuel burning, industrial activity or waste incineration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Health effects:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effects of heavy metals on human health depend on the type of metal, the dose, and the duration of exposure.
